Observation of mesoscopic clathrate structures in ethanol-water mixtures

Alcohol in water is one of the fundamental liquid–liquid solutions chemical and biological processes. Water-alcohol mixtures exhibit many abnormal physicochemical properties, origins which remain mysterious. In addition, presence a high concentration mesoscale objects such has caused debate; researchers attribute these to bulk nanobubbles because their strongly affected by amount dissolved air gases. To resolve issues, here we use transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), atomic force (AFM) study ethanol–water mixtures. TEM reveals mesoscopic clathrate structures with molecules forming crystalline matrix hosting density tiny cells. The further supported refractive index 1.27 ± 0.02 at 405 nm measured via NTA hydrophilic nature implied AFM observations, explaining long-standing puzzles related water-alcohol
